Case Study 3

Copyediting and Formatting Multiple Essays

Student Name: John A.

University: University of Plymouth

Client’s Requirements: John wanted to make sure that his answers to his essay questions made sense and came across the way he intended it to; he purchased our copyediting service to help him with this. In addition, John was left with no time to format his four essays according to the university’s requirements, so had also asked for our formatting service. The deadline for both the copyediting and formatting to be completed was five days.

How We Helped: After reading each of the essays, we first assured him that, overall, his English was of a very good standard and that we could understand his answers to the questions. However, there were some instances where the clarity, tone, style, and use of language was difficult to understand, which needed amending. We made sure that extremely long sentences were shortened to make the sentences clearer and to keep the essays within the word count, and made sure that paragraphs had included headings and subheadings where appropriate. Furthermore, we replaced certain words with others to make the essays sound more professional and make it clear to the examiner what points John is trying to get across.

Once John approved of our proposed copyediting changes, we went on to read the university requirements for each of the essays and created a cover page, table of contents, appendix, and list of acronyms page to meet the university requirements, as well as provide a professional structure to the essays. We then added page numbers and made sure the headings and subheadings in the table of contents corresponded to the correct page numbers. We then made the final touches by making sure the line spacing, font, and margins were in accordance with the university requirements.

End Result: The initial copyedited work was given to John within 48 hours, and the final work, including the formatting, was given within 3 days, 2 days earlier than the agreed deadline. John managed to get a First Class grade in each of his four essays, making him secure a First Class grade for the year and placing him among the top 12 percent of the highest achieving students in the University! John continues to use our services to this day.

Client Feedback: “As a non-native English speaker, I had a few problems with my English. Alkyone’s copyediting and formatting services helped me massively in my writing skills and helped me with my blog posts. I couldn’t be any more thankful with the service.”
